Getting from Idea to solution
Generating a promising idea how to improve the life of the customer or her processes by implementing Material Sensing capabilities is a fun and somewhat easy thing to do. Turning this idea into reality is the real challenge. Especially, since spectroscopy as the technology behind Material Sensing requires some extra steps compared to other sensor solutions. Let’s have a look at all necessary steps on your way from an idea to a happy customer.
The Material Sensing workflow in a nutshell
The Material Sensing workflow consists of seven steps. First, you need to come up with an idea or use case. In case you are not already a spectroscopy expert, it pays off to understand how Material Sensing works in the next step Explore & Understand. In this stage, you will also most likely try to assess whether your idea is possible with spectroscopic sensor solutions at all and our Senorics solution in particular. If that is the case, the next step Measure & Analyze will enable you to create a measuring algorithm that will identify or quantify substances.
The idea stage
The objective of this stage is to form a clear idea of a value-inducing use case that is rendered possible by Material Sensing. To some, this is easy, whereas others have a harder time to come up with a good idea. Some are best at ideating alone while for others a team setting is most effective. What ever type of creative person you are, it is always a good idea to sharpen your senses and always be open to recognize promising opportunities. The Explore & Understand stage
If you are already a spectroscopic expert, you can probably skip this step. If you are not, it is a wise idea to familiarize yourself with all relevant aspects of Material Sensing. The Measure & Analyze stage
In this stage, the main focus is on checking the feasibility of the application and train the sensor in order to repeatedly achieve reliable results. To check the feasibility of the application, you have two options: You can take a spectroscopic device like our Senocorder Solid and take numerous spectral measurements of multiple samples. At the same time, you get the “real” values of the substances you are interested in by reference analysis.
Both are input data to derive a measuring algorithm. You might need to iterate that process until you end up with an algorithm that fits your requirements and generates the result accuracy you are interested in. Or you have the whole process done by us. Once you have the measuring algorithm, you can always add more spectral measurements of different samples and the corresponding reference values to strengthen the algorithm. This process can be seen as a form of “sensor training”.
The Develop & Build stage
If you need to integrate Material Sensing capabilities into an existing product or envision your own proprietary device, you will most likely at some point need to build a prototype of such a solution. This is best done once you have a solid feasibility check result. You can then start building your own Material Sensing solution based on existing hardware components. Or you can have it build by us. Once you have the first prototype, it usually takes a couple of iterations to get to a final version. Depending on the specific setup, you might be able to transfer the generated measurement algorithm or you might need to redo the sensor training.
The Optimize & Produce stage
This stage is all about achieving mass market readiness for your product. Meaning that you will take actions to optimize your product for production at large-scale and then start mass production. At this point, you need to take good care (with our help if you want) to adopt the measuring algorithm to each product as there are slight deviations of your products. That is totally normal and can be addressed by modern technologies like machine learning. At the end of this stage you have a product that is ready to be sold.
The Launch & Sell stage
Now the final day is here: your product gets into the hand of the first customer! Before it got there, you have identified a suitable business model and the appropriate sales channels. Your marketing plan was carefully executed as well. With your pilot customers using the products you might encounter some minor issues that you can easily deal with using appropriate software for analysis and updates.
The Tweak & Improve stage
With more and more people or organizations using your Material Sensing solution, you get more and more insights into their behaviour and feedback from customers. This allows you to add new features and thereby increase customer satisfaction. Furthermore, you can also offer customized business models depending on the way how people use your product. If the demand is rising and more and more of your products are used, it pays off quickly to have a scalable cloud infrastructure like our SenoCloud in place.
